Ever heard of the game "six degrees of Kevin Bacon"? It's the idea that pretty much everyone in Hollywood is only separated by six degrees or less from Kevin Bacon. His career has been so prolific that he's worked with virtually every celebrity, director, or writer at some point. Born and raised in Philadelphia, his breakout role was in Diner in 1982, though most people know him from the iconic Footloose. Other notable films include Tremors, Apollo 13, and most recently the Following. He's been married to actress Kyra Sedgwick since 1988 and has two children.
Kevin Bacon's last name, 'Bacon,' has two possible meanings: an occupational name referring to someone who sold and cured pork or from a root meaning "to fight," referring to a warrior. It has French and German origins but comes most commonly from England, where it was introduced by the Normans in the 11th Century. The original spelling was most likely "Bacun" or ÔBacus." Most of the Bacons migrated from Normandy to Suffolk. The first recorded Bacons to come to American arrived in 1635 in Massachusetts and Virginia.
